Pharmacological action of benzocaine: local use of nerve tissue acting on skin and mucous membranes, blocking the conduction of nerve impulses, temporarily losing various sensations, paralyzing the nerve endings and producing analgesic and antipruritic effects. The local anesthetic effect of benzocaine is weaker than procaine, and it can be absorbed slowly for external use. It has a long-lasting effect and has analgesic and antipruritic effects. The toxicity of benzocaine is only 1/20 to 1/160 of cocaine.
