What is saffron?
“Stop and smell the flowers” goes the old saying. The new one - Stop and taste the flowers. Already a part of many medical systems as extracts and ingredients, flowers are the big new trend in foods, especially beverages and desserts. If you find this amazing, we’d like to remind you that your favorite spice, saffron, is part of a flower.
Saffron has through history remained among the world's most costly substances and used as a seasoning, fragrance, dye, and medicine.
The characteristic yellow-orange color of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) comes from water-soluble pigment, the carotenoid Crocin. Saffron carotenoids with ethanol-extractable mostly contain safranal as an antibacterial was used in Persian traditional medicine to treat some skin disorders. The extracted carotenoids from saffron as an antioxidant prevent many common diseases by taming harmful molecules known as free radicals.
What factors determine the costs of Saffron?
1.The high cost of saffron is due to the difficulty of manually extracting large numbers of minute stigmas, which are the only part of the crocus with the desired aroma and flavor.
2.Obtaining 1 lb (0.45 kg) of dry saffron requires the harvesting of some 50,000 flowers, the equivalent of an association football pitch's area of cultivation, or roughly 7,140 m2 (0.714 ha).
3.Once extracted, the stigmas must be dried quickly, lest decomposition or mold ruin the batch's marketability.
The Medicinal Benefits of Saffron:
1)Protects against cancer:
Saffron contains a dark orange carotene called crocin, which is responsible for much of saffron's golden color. Crocin has been found to trigger apoptosis [ programmed cell death] in a number of different types of human cancer cells, leukemia, ovarian carcinoma, colon adenocarcinoma, and soft tissue sarcoma.
2)Saffron helps your brain:
Researchers have shown that crocin, the active component of saffron, keeps your brain cells young and sharp. It protects them possibly because of its antioxidant action. Snapping up free radicals keeps the immune response in working order, which protects healthy cells from attack. You want to keep as many healthy brain cells as you possibly can, for as long as you live.
3)Controls Diabetes: The significant levels of manganese in saffron can help the body optimize its blood sugar levels.
4)Relieves Anxiety:
Saffron has been known to relieve mild depression and can stimulate the release of beneficial hormones that keep us happy and healthy if regularly consumed.
Treating depression with medicine often leaves people frustrated and sometimes worse off than they started. There’s a lot of trial and error involved before you and your doctor find the right treatment. The effectiveness varies from person to person, but they all come with a laundry list of awful side effects that nobody wants — loss of libido, weight gain, mania, and more. Saffron might offer a natural alternative to pills, although we need more research to be sure.
The antidepressant effects of saffron were compared side-by-side with commonly prescribed antidepressant medications. Researchers found that saffron is just as effective in reducing symptoms of mild to moderate depression as imipramine (Tofranil) without the dry mouth and sedation that comes with the prescription.Studies showed similar effects when comparing saffron and fluoxetine (Prozac).
